Arturo's new web page

Arturo and I recently re-designed his page to look a bit more contemporary - really just for fun and to change things up.

Tucson

I'd say we had a pretty great time

Mom and Dad spent a week with us in Oaxaca, relaxing and, basically, eating a lot. Here we are in San Agustin Etla, enjoying some early morning Coronas and mezcales, accompanied by memelas and tlayudas.

Etla!

There are many more photos of their visit, which you can see by clicking on the photo or clicking here >

At last, visual proof that Sally came to Oaxaca last summer

And look how squeaky clean we all are!

Two Great Openings, One Unforgettable Night

The title is a joke, but Arturo and I did have co-openings in San Miguel about two weeks ago. I am really terrible at documenting my work, but I did manage to add a few new paintings to the website.

Arturo and I wrote a sort of amusing double interview to promote our shows, which was published in Atencion San Miguel on January 18th.

Julie Interviews Arturo
Julie Doherty: Do you think that living in Oaxaca has affected your artistic style or creative process?
Arturo Meade: I don't think necessarily that Oaxaca has affected me yet, but the change of residence and the lack of time for painting because of the move have forced me to ask the question, why do I paint? And where am I in my personal process? It has been an opportunity to reshape my concepts.
JD: When did you start painting?
AM: In 2000, I decided to dedicate all my creative efforts to painting. Actually, it was the day after the fall of the Twin Towers. After that event, I was even more convinced that I wanted to dedicate my life to art. Read more, if you really want>

8 Enero 2008. Check out this pretty boid

He appeared in a tree in front of our house this afternoon, to join the wild bird party that was already in progress.

Boid!

Enero, 2008.

Not Dead

San Agustin Etla, 29 Diciembre 2007

[Many thanks to Sonspring for this way awesome code that creates the rollover effect on the images]

Meanwhile, birthdays.

I heart Mi Gusto Es...

Visions of Oaxaca

One of the interesting things about living in Oaxaca is seeing how each person views the city. There are so many ways to interpret Oaxaca - so many angles on its unique and changeable personality, its contemporary and traditional aesthetics, its appealing mix of sophistication and provincialism.

Carson and Scott were our first guests in Oaxaca last July, and I just got my hands on some of the pictures Scott took while they were here. You can see a few more on the Oaxaca page, where there are two other contrasting perspectives on Oaxaca, as chronicled by Roberto Meade, and Xavier and Carolyna Meade, in the summer of 07.

Today is Thursday, a few days before Christmas, though its too glorious for Christmastime - too sunny and dry. The winter consellations are dazzling. The stars literally pulse over Oaxaca. As night falls, Orion rises above the mountains to the Southeast, then arches across the sky.

On that note, a happy solstice to all (12:08 am on December 22, here in Mexico). Peace and blessings to all creatures.

New Web Design - La Bottega di Casa, December Catalog

For Christmas, La Bottega di Casa wanted a new design for their Spanish language page, which had the look and feel of a holiday catalog. You can visit the page, and browse through the Bottega's beautiful products by clicking here.

Noviembre, 2007 - Fulana de Tal con Las Vacas

Amy and Cows

September 20, 2007 -- South of Puebla, the highway divides in two. One fork veers eastward, into the mountainous state of Veracruz. The other way leads South, into the state of Oaxaca. Arturo and I were on that highway in early March, headed toward Xalapa. But the moment we saw the highway sign that read OAXACA, our hearts had already travelled down the other road to that magic city. Even the word OAXACA is in itself so charming, so irresistible -- the way its written, the way it sounds. I think in that moment we knew -- even as we chose wrongly and stayed the course to Xalapa -- that there was nowhere else we wanted to be. Three months later, when everything had been sold, and that which hadn't been sold was packed into the moving van, we drove down that road with two hysterical dogs and, under the canopy of thunderstorms and later, tropical constellations, arrived at our new home.

Recent Work in Web Design

I just finished a new page for San Miguel-based artist Edina Sagert. Using CSS-based design techniques, this page has a clean and neutral design, which highlights Edina's colorful encaustic and oil and paintings.
